Blessings Afro Queers and Good People of the Like!

This post is centered around the sharing of an awesomely amazing and brilliant project entitled, Hidden in the Open: A Photographic Essay of Afro American Male Couples. For those of you who may already know about this collection, please do continue to share and spread the wonders of this project!

Hidden in the Open is the work of curator, Trent Kelly. Trent has assembled an in depth collection of images, prints, and photographs that reveal the affections, coupling, and/or romance of Black Gay Men. The collection tells the stories and histories of Black Gay Men in America with a remarkable visual truth and insight that adds to the visual culture and fabric of the narrative of Afro Queer folks.

Please do enjoy your stroll through this collection and share with your loved ones!

South African Activists Decry Rapes of Lesbians

Black America Web News recently published a brief article that details the work South African lesbian activists and community folk in Cape Town are organizing around corrective rape targeting lesbians. Yesterday, Monday, March 14th, there were multiple demonstrations outside of parliament and there has been much mobilization of petitions globally!

Keeping an ear to the ground of South Africa’s struggles around violence and hate crimes is a necessary stand in solidarity and in building a conscious network of effective organizing and resistance!

Antonia Pantoja (1922-2002), visionary Puerto Rican educator, activist, and early proponent of bilingual education, inspired multiple generations of young people and fought for many of the rights that people take for granted today. Unbowed by obstacles she encountered as a black, Puerto Rican woman, she founded ASPIRA to empower Puerto Rican youth, and created other enduring leadership and advocacy organizations in New York and California, across the United States, and in Puerto Rico. Recognized for her achievements in 1996, Dr. Pantoja was awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor bestowed upon civilians in the US.

SVP Call for Papers! :

Shifting the Vantage Point invites the submission of original, engaging, well-written, truth-telling, and previously unpublished Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Queer [LGBT] love stories, personal essays, creative non-fiction, interviews, novel excerpts, and/poetry for a forthcoming anthology, Same-Sex, Same-Gender: Stories of Transformation, Hope and Love. This anthology is being prepared for publication online and for print at a small independent publishing house. Shifting the Vantage Point welcomes all stories of love, struggle, change, the search for identity, gender re-assignment, gender roles, living in secret, coming out, living as “butch” or “femme”, labeling in the LGBTQ community, parenting an LGBTQ child, etc.

SVP strongly encourages submissions from LGBTQ people of color.
